AUTHENTIC NEAPOLITAN PIZZA AT MOZZA, UNION SQUARE ABERDEEN

MOZZA PIZZA MASTERCLASS

If you haven’t already noticed Mozza is the latest restaurant to open up in Union Square, Aberdeen. Mozza is run by Tony Macaroni and already had restaurants in Glasgow, St Andrew and Dundee.

When I was invited along to the pizza masterclass I had to make sure I could be there! There is nothing more I love food wise than pizza!

AUTHENTIC NEAPOLITAN PIZZA

Area manager Riccardo gave us an introduction to the story behind Mozza and the authentic Nepalese pizza they make. He explained how the style of pizza stands out from most as it is a much lighter, doughy base and is cooked in a way passed down through generations in Naples region in Italy.

THE MASTERCLASS

Riccardo then took a group of us through to the kitchen where he explained the process of how the sour dough is proved for 72 hours before use to provide a lighter, tastier dough.

As the pizza chef was preparing the pizza Riccardo explained how the dough is only kneaded and shaped by hand.

ONLY 90 SECONDS TO COOK

The pizza was then placed into the oven rotating around the bottom for 60 seconds before being lifted up to the ‘sky’ to be smoked for 30 second.

Once the pizza was cooked we got to try a slice of the finished product – which just made us even more excited for our own pizzas to arrive!

13 PIZZAS TO CHOOSE FROM

With 13 different pizzas to choose from there is plenty to choose from. I opted to try out number 4 which was topped with red peppers, mozzarella, pesto, basil & olive oil and boy was it a good choice!

Lucky 13 Mozza Dare

Pizza number 13 is a Lucky 13 Mozza Dare, which is when you place your trust in the chef’s creativity and try a mystery surprise pizza.

A couple of the other bloggers opted for this and this is what they were presented with…

If your someone who will eat anything and can’t choose between the pizza’s on the menu this is a great choice and you’ll get whatever the chef decides to make that day.

DESSERT

Next up was dessert – I opted for the strawberry cheese cake which came in a cute little jar with a Mozza wafer on the top. It was rich, creamy and exactly how a cheesecake should be… can you tell I love cheesecake!

A number of the other bloggers, tried the Birramisu which also seemed to be a hit with everyone that tasted it.

THANK YOU MOZZA

I had a fab evening at Mozza learning about pizza making, tasting pizza and meeting some new faces as well as catching up with others.

I’d like to thank Steph and Riccardo at Mozza for organising such a fab evening and for the gifts of a Mozza gold card & Prosecco! I can’t wait to visit again!

You can see more of the action from the masterclass in our YouTube video showing the pizza preparation & cooking process

REVIEW | DISNEY ON ICE WORLDS OF ENCHANTMENT, ABERDEEN EXHIBITION & CONFERENCE CENTRE MAY 2018

DISNEY ON ICE WORLDS OF ENCHANTMENT

ABERDEEN EXHIBITION & CONFERENCE CENTRE MAY 2018

We were lucky enough to be invited along to see Disney on Ice Worlds of Enchantment at Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre on Wednesday 2nd May 2018.

As soon as we seen Lightning McQueen was part of the show we knew S would love it! Before the show we had the chance to go to a meet and greet where S got to meet Mickey Mouse – however he was a bit unsure about Mickey!

The Show

The show kicked off with the hosts Mickey and Minnie Mouse welcoming the crowd and hinting to what was coming next.

Toy Story

First up was Toy Story, as soon as the theme song came on S knew exactly who was coming exclaiming “the Woody song!”

The Toy Story soldiers marched in in formation to kick of the segment with some impressive moves.

Then it was time for the star of Toy Story 3 to make their entrance with Woody, Buzz and the rest of the gang waving to the audience as they skated on the ice – S was waving back to Woody and Buzz amazed at seeing them on the ice.

Acting out scenes from Toy Story 3 the characters told the story of the toys ending up at Sunnyside Daycare and planning their escape.

With Barbie and Woody carrying out their plan to trick Ken they managed to rescue the rest of the toys.

The Little Mermaid

Next up it was the turn of The Little Mermaid with Ariel and Flounder appearing on the ice – this was one of my favourite films as a child and made me realise S hasn’t seen it yet so it’s now on our ‘to watch’ list!

Bubbles also fell down adding to the ‘under the sea’ feeling of the segment. Four lucky children were also taken onto the ice as part of the main routine.

Cars

he interval Mickey and Minnie returned to the stage with their car which ran into problems so was the perfect lead in to the stars of Cars making their entrance onto the ice and what an entrance was made by the films stars.

“the real Lighting McQueen!”

And the moment S had been waiting for had arrived – “the real Lighting McQueen!” He was so excited to see his favourite character (who he has several miniture versions of at home!)

Seeing his face light up just summed up the magic of Disney to me and the amazement of these shows for wee ones.

Frozen

Last but not least was the turn of Frozen with impressive skating from Princess Anna, before Queen Elsa joining her with snow falling down after the had ‘frozen’ Arendelle.

Overall

The show is great for all ages and just watching S’ face light up at seeing his favourites on the ice added to the magic of the whole show. In S’ words it was “Amazing! We seen the real Lightning McQueen”.

Looking around the arena you could see the delight on the kids faces at seeing their favourite stories coming to life on the ice – with lots dressed up as their favourite Disney characters.

The show started of at 6.30pm, after doors opened at 5.30pm, with a 15 minute interval at 7.30 the show finished at 8.30pm.

We’d like to thank Disney on Ice for having us along to the show and an enjoyable family evening out.

The show is on at the Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre until Sunday 6th May 2018.

Highlight Clips

We managed to get a few clips on film which you can check out in our YouTube video – showing the amazing entrance onto the ice by Lightning McQueen!

REVIEW | ALL BAR ONE, MARISCHAL SQUARE ABERDEEN

REVIEW | ALL BAR ONE, MARISCHAL SQUARE ABERDEEN

All Bar One has arrived in Aberdeen and it has opened up in the new Marishal Square development, across from Marishal College.

A, S and myself have been there twice now and this post is based on our two visits so be prepared for lots of yummy food photos!

SMALL PLATES/TAPAS STYLE DISHES

During both visits we opted for 3 dishes from the small plates/tapas style selection for starters. These small plate dishes would also be a great accompaniment for catching up with friends over a couple of drinks or as a light lunch option.

CRUSHED AVOCADO & TOMATO BRUSCHETTA

For me, as soon as I see brushetta as an option on a menu I have to have it and had to be picked on both visits! As one of my favourite dishes when out for food or cooking at home this is the first time I’ve seen it served with avocado and I thought it was a great combination.

CHORIZO & HALLOUMI SKEWERS

A’s pick of the small plates was the chorizo and halloumi skewers. As someone who hasn’t really tried halloumi before these were a tasty combination and a dish I would pick again.

BOX-BAKED CAMEMBERT

Cheese and bread a match made in heaven! Even S dived right in to try it out – although he definitely ate more bread on it’s own than with the cheese!

STONEBAKED GARLIC FLATBREAD

Who doesn’t like garlic bread?! A generous portion but a light weight starter ensuring that there was plenty of room for main course!

LOBSTER MAC & CHEESE

Another of A’s picks, he enjoyed this bubbling hot lobster mac & cheese. As someone who loves mac & cheese it looked SO good – however as I don’t eat seafood I can’t say how it tasted but I’m assured by A it was good.

KIDS MEALS

For us the range of kids meals available in restaurants dictates where we end up eating, if there isn’t anything on the menu we think S will try then it rules out the restaurant straight away – thankfully All Bar One had several meals on their kids menu we thought would cater to our fussy 3 year olds tastes.

KIDS GRILLED CHICKEN BREAST

During our first visit we chose the chicken breast for S, which served with a choice of steamed rice, fries or salad. For S it was always going to be fries! Our fussy 3 year old wouldn’t eat the grilled parts of the chicken, ate up the rest of it and the chips – with his usual ketchup and mayo combo along with it!

KIDS COD GOUJONS

Second time we picked the cod goujons for S, again served with a choice of steamed rice, fries or salad – these were a big hit with S!

MAIN MEALS

All Bar One have a wide range of main meals from sandwiches, salads, burgers and more – perfect for a lunch with the family or catching up with the girls over dinner and drinks.

GRILLED CHICKEN FOCACCIA

The grilled chicken focaccia filled with smashed avocado, roasted red pepper, rocket and a sunblush tomato & basil dressing along with a generous portion of fries.

CHICKEN QUESADILLA

A’s first choice was the Chicken Quesadilla – a chargrilled tortilla with pulled chicken, black beans, peppers, lime and mozzarella. Served with pineapple and habanero ketchup served with fries.

BURGERS

All of the burger options can be served with either a beef burger, cornflake & buttermilk fried chicken or aubergine & harissa burger and served in a glazed brioche bun with a dill gherkin and fries.

THE BRUNCH – CHICKEN BURGER

The Brunch – Smoked back bacon, roast mushroom, fried egg & bloody mary ketchup – was A’s pick of the burgers.

THE ULTIMATE – CHICKEN BURGER

I opted for The Ultimate – smoked back bacon, smoked cheddar and All Bar One’s signature burger sauce – with the cornflake & buttermilk fried chicken and had fries with parmesan to accompany it. This is something I will be going back to have again – the chicken was delicious!

SWEET TREATS

Who can say no to dessert? Not us!

KIDS CHOCOLATE BROWNIE

S opted for the chocolate brownie from the kids options and it was a good sized portion served with a scoop of ice cream. Judging by the clear plate at the end, S clearly enjoyed it!

CHURROS

Churros are one of my favourites so we got a portion to share on our first visit, which S had clearly remembered about as on our second visit he was ready to order them when we were ordering our main courses!

CRANACHAN SUNDAE

A picked out the cranachan sundae – toasted oats & crushed raspberries in whisky with honey and cream. Served with generous scoops of bourbon vanilla ice cream and Scottish short bread. A loved his sweet Scottish dessert.

OVERALL

We had a great time on both visits to All Bar One, enjoyed the food and would throughly recommend visiting. I’m sure we’ll be back again soon – if S has something to do with it he’ll be back for more churros in no time at all! The staff were very friendly and accommodating towards S – especially when he was getting restless and wanted to play peek-a-boo with the lady at the counter behind us.

You can see more of what All Bar One has to offer over on Facebook, Instagram and over on their website.
